Iran Condemns US Veto of Palestine’s UN Membership Bid

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the US’ “irresponsible and unconstructive” veto on a draft resolution at the UN Security Council which recommended granting the State of Palestine full membership in the United Nations.

In a statement on Friday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said the veto has further laid bare the hypocritical nature of Washington’s foreign policy and the isolation of the US’ stances in the international community.

The US regime’s unilateral and unrestricted political, economic, military, and judicial supports for the Zionist regime that have been provided during the past seven decades at the American people’s expense and also at the expense of sacrificing regional and international peace and security have been rendered dysfunctional, disgraced the US’ governance system in the world, and proved that the US is neither an impartial player nor a responsible actor in the international community, Kanaani said.

He then reaffirmed the Palestinian nation’s legitimate and inalienable right to form a sovereign Palestinian government across the entire Palestinian territories from the river to the sea with holy al-Quds as its capital.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that the determination of the resistant and hero Palestinian nation will ultimately overcome the will of enemies of the Palestinian nation, above all the fake, apartheid and criminal Israeli regime,” he stated.

In a vote of 12 in favor to one against, with two abstentions, the UN Security Council on Thursday did not adopt a draft resolution that would have recommended the General Assembly to hold a vote with the broader UN membership to allow Palestine to join as a full UN Member State.

The veto by Israel’s main political and military backer had been expected ahead of the vote. Twelve countries voted in favor of the resolution, which was introduced by Algeria, while the United Kingdom and Switzerland abstained.

The office of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said the US veto was “blatant aggression … which pushes the region ever further to the edge of the abyss”.

In a statement, the presidency called the US veto “unfair, unethical and unjustified”.
