Tehran, Kuala Lumpur to Expand Agricultural Research Cooperation

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Officials from Iran and Malaysia emphasized closer cooperation in the field of agricultural research after signing a memorandum of understanding.

Iran’s Agricultural Research, Education and Extension Organization (AREEO) and Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) has recently signed a memorandum of understanding on research cooperation.

In comments at a meeting held to review the provisions of the MoU, Head of AREEO Mojtaba Khayyam Nekouei said Iran has called for the compilation of a comprehensive road map to the development of research, educational and extensional cooperation with Malaysia in the agricultural sector.

Emphasizing the need to compile the road map based upon research activities, educational and extensional cooperation with Malaysia in the field of agriculture, the deputy minister said the joint agricultural projects should lead to the production and development of product in the two countries.

Expounding on plans to implement the memorandum of understanding with Malaysia, Khayyam Nekouei said his organization is ready to take measures for conducting research in the production of mango, banana, pineapple and other tropical fruits.

He also called for the exchange of experts in the agricultural research sector, setting up joint research centers in the field of citrus fruits, and launching joint rice research centers in order to share the experiences and technical know-how between Tehran and Kuala Lumpur.

Iran and Malaysia enjoy high potentials to expand their cooperation by setting up a joint research center in the field of livestock sciences and poultry for exchanging experiences and technical know-how, the deputy minister of agriculture stressed.
