Iran’s Export of Saffron Up 52% in 5 Months: Spokesperson

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Over 81,520 tons of saffron, valued at $88 million, were exported from the country to 47 countries of the world in the first five months of the current Iranian calendar year, according to the spokesperson for Iran’s Trade Promotion Commission of House of Industry, Mine and Trade.

Iran’s export of saffron to 47 countries of the world from March 21 to August 22, 2023 registered a 66 and a 52 percent hike in weight and value respectively compared to the same period of last year, Seyed Rouhollah Latifi said.

China was Iran’s first export target market in this period, he said, adding that the East Asian country imported 28,447 kg of saffron, valued at over $33, from Iran.

He pointed to other export destinations of Iran’s saffron and added that the United Arab Emirates imported 19,116 kg of saffron from Iran, valued at over $21 million, followed by Spain, Qatar and Afghanistan respectively.

Iran is the world’s biggest saffron producer with over 300 tons of saffron per year and accounts for more than 90% of global production.
